News from Around the South Jersey Shore

Yikes. If Cape May doesn't watch it, they could lose their Historic Landmark status.

Do we care?

Bunch of folks in Ocean City are trying to get them to allow BYOB. Don't think it's going to happen.

Yikes!

Yup. Revel is still empty.

This is still going on? Come on, West Wildwood.

Queen of the Sea Isle polar plunge is now an author.

Old news

Two caveats:

1. I love Marketplace. I try to listen every weekday, and I run to their weekend podcast.
2. I love Joel Rose's reports about the NJ/Philadelphia area.

But this story didn't strike a good chord. Why?

This is not a new story. This isn't even a new *concept.* Atlantic City has ALWAYS gone after conventions - hence the name the "Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority" as the group that runs tourism in the city.

Let's go back even further: Boardwalk Hall was built in 1926 to attract conventions.

I know this is a sexy lead right now because gambling revenues are so down in AC, but they've never not tried to bring conventions to the shore.

I'll get off my soap box now.

New Donut Shop Coming to Ocean City

Prepare for a food throw down.

This spring, the Fractured Prune is opening up a location in Ocean City, specifically at 1225 Asbury Ave.

The company, which has spots in Maryland, Delaware, Ohio and Pennsylvania, has a motto of "You Create Em, We Make Em" - i.e. you pick the toppings and glazes.

Soft opening is Easter weekend.

Now, I don't like donuts, but people who do rave about Brown's in Ocean City, which has been in business since 1976. Will we get a food fight this summer? Perhaps, though there is more than one pizza place in town.

Will you try a new donut spot?

News from Around the South Jersey Shore

I'm tempted to buy this just for the name: a Sea Isle beacon blanket for the same reason I read Strathmere's Bride.

Ocean City creates tourism campaign. Speaking of, has anyone else seen the Cape May billboard on the Walt Whitman bridge?

There's going to be a rodeo in Atlantic City April 1-3. This coincides with the Atlantic City Beer Festival. Write your own joke here.

Good news: record traffic at the AC airport.

KITTY HICCUPS IS THE NEW MISS'D AMERICA! I had planned to do a whole post, but it got away from me. The short: I had a BLAST. Gusty Winds, you were my favorite. If the competition was judged on camp alone, you'd have won hands down. I think this thing is only going to get better. GET THIS SHOW ON TV! For real. It's on the same level as RuPaul's Drag Race.

You MUST check out the video here.

The only other note from the weekend: deep tissue massage at Bluemercury in the Tropicana was worth every penny. Not for the faint of heart, though.

Name Change

You might notice something different when you clicked over today. This website is no longer on the blogspot.com address - it's now its own entity. So if you link to the blog, let's update! We're now at www.downtheshorewithjen.com.

Remembering Matt

Today is the one year anniversary of the death of Matt McCulley. I'm still at a complete loss of what to say about someone wonderful we lost so soon. So all I'll say is, if you have a moment, if you're the praying type, to pray for his family.

One Day Sale at the Virginia

A bunch of you jumped on the one day Congress Hall/Virginia sale last year. This year, it looks like the deals are happening at the Virginia.

Here's what you'll get if you book on 1/11/11:

$82 weekday/$109 weekend for stays January 11 to February 28.
$82 weekday/$129-169 weekend for stays March 1 to March 31
$109 weekday/$169 weekend for stays April 1 to April 14.

There are some blackout dates in there, namely those over MLK and Valentine's Day weekends: January 15, January 16, February 19, February 20.

The promo code is 24H.

There's a bunch of fine print about this sale, and I had problems last year booking for weekends in March, but I know some of you grabbed this for Easter weekend. So if you try, report back on how it went. And if you have a problem booking this, call the hotel, not me :-)

Miss'd America 2011

On January 16, I'll be attending the Miss'd America Pageant, which is a drag version of Miss America. It takes place in Boardwalk Hall - yes, the former home of the original pageant. My favorite contestant name so far: Gusty Winds.

I'm obnoxiously excited. I was out of town for it last time, and pounced on the chance to attend this year. Over 1,300 people attended in 2010.

My only question is: What the heck do I wear?

Round Two: The Cover

Isn't she pretty?

This is the cover of the second edition of my book. I think it's lovely. Special thanks to Justin Gaynor for the cover photo.

You'll be noticing a lot of changes around here soon. First, the blog is migrating over to downtheshorewithjen.com. In March, she'll get a facelift - nothing drastic, but something that is more fitting to what she's become. Also starting in March, I'll be posting a Jersey Shore fact of the day both on my twitter feed and my Facebook fan page.

I don't know if I'm ready to do this all over again, but I don't think I have a choice, do I? :-)
