What are Your Backroads?

Shore traffic stinks. I'm lucky in that I rarely have to drive in rush hour since I can set up my schedule around it. But for a lot of people, they want to hit the ground running once they get out of the office, which means jams.

So what are your back roads to the shore? I know some people will never ever ever share (I had this experience last year), but others are proud of their alternate route and how much time it saves. So leave your way in the comments and maybe help a fellow traveler.

My parents have a nice set of backroads routes, but neither one of them tell me what they are. They've been taking those roads since they were teenagers, and never had to write it down.

In the wall twp. area, new bedford and bailey's corner rd. are excellent alternatives to route 35.

from Marlton, I used to take 73 to 322 and then route 9 down to OC. Avoided tolls and traffic during bad times.

County Route 571 is an excellent backroad for anyone coming from southwestern Somerset County, Mercer County, northeastern Burlington County, and northwestern Monmouth County.

It begins at Route 27 in Princeton Borough and ends at Route 37 in Toms River, with multiple connecting roadways intersecting along the way, including CR 524, 526, and 537.

It's also very scenic, passing by active farmland, through small villages, and is very curvy at times. For these reasons, use caution at night.

To OCNJ, I always get off the Expressway after Egg Harbor and take 50 thru Mays Landing.

I don't think it counts as a short cut (takes about the same time) but it is more scenic, and it's easier to pull over when one of your kids gets carsick. Believe me, I know.

Thanks everyone!

And Patrick, I know what graveyard they're talking about. Have no idea what road it is that you'd turn on!

Its been a while since I've done this- but from Delaware County to Ocean City- I used to take the Commodore Barry Bridge, then 322 to a small road RT 538 and take that for a good while towards RT 40 and Mays Landing. Maybe someone else has better specifics, but I do remember it would beat a lot of that congested 95/Walt Whitman/AC Expressway traffic.
