Column about Gambling

In today's Philadelphia Inquirer, you'll find a column by Marilyn Lancelot about gambling addition, specifically women with gambling addictions. A sample:

"Compulsive gambling is a silent addiction. You can't smell it or taste it, and you can't get in trouble unless you do something illegal. Illegal activity is often where it leads. I should know; I embezzled a fortune, more than $300,000, and ended up in prison. That was 17 years ago, and after my release I never gambled again."

You can read the article here.

I didn't write too much about gambling in Atlantic City in my book. One, I only had so much space, and there was more than enough to write about in Atlantic City that did not involve games of chance. Two, I'm not exactly comfortable with gambling. I took no pleasure in watching hundreds of senior citizens who looked like they were chained to slot machines. They didn't look happy about it, and I wasn't happy for them. I also dated a guy with an addictive personality and saw how easily he could be roped in by the gambling bug. It's scary.

I go to Atlantic City more than I used to, but for everything else. The most I'll do gambling wise is play $5 in slots. I've done OK so far -- once winning $27 and another time $200. But each time I've been up, I cashed out. It's too easy to get roped in.

Anyway, that's my soap box commentary for the day.

I never got to gamble in AC as I moved away when I was 20. But now when I go back, I always seem to do everything else BUT throw the dice.

The One-Armed Bandit is a weakness to some... for me, it's the buffets!
